How to Dress for a Job Interview Depending on the Company

One of the most stressful things you have to deal with when you have a job interview coming up is deciding what to wear. It might not be at the forefront of your mind, but you’ll regret it if you don’t think about it until 10 minutes before you have to leave. It was easier in the past, when you just had to wear a suit whatever the job. Over the years though, the professional world and the way interviews take place have changed.

Startups, and other companies with a younger workforce, don’t require the same dress code as a conventional company, where your prospective bosses might be older. What you wear communicates a message to the interviewer, and can define a large part of their first impression, which could be crucial. At Wordans we want to help however we can, so we’ve put together three looks that you can go for, depending on the type of company you’re interviewing for. Time to find the perfect outfit, and make the perfect first impression.

For the Conservative Company

Some companies still have a strict and formal dress code. Law firms, senior financial companies, and banks, to name a few. Those kinds of jobs require you to dress smartly and professionally, to show your interviewer that you’re a responsible, hard-working person.

In this case, the suit is still king. A suit and tie for men, a skirt or pantsuit for women, a shirt, and smart shoes. Some of these types of companies are relaxing things a little, so you can wear an open-necked shirt, or chinos instead of slacks. Remember though– if you’re not sure, it’s better to be a little too formal than the opposite.

For the Startup

Startups are often characterized by a fresh, young, and energetic working environment. They’ll often have a more modern, relaxed dress code and interview process. They still want to come across as professional though, and you should consider that in your choice of outfit.

Avoid the suit, but a hoodie and jeans isn’t much better. You want to find the middle ground– a relaxed shirt is fine, but a smart polo will also work, or a nice sweater. Go for a fairly formal skirt or pants, like chinos, and shoes or smart sneakers. This should give you a professional look, without appearing stuffy.

For the Creative Roles

If you’re going to an interview with a disruptive fashion company, you have to show something different when it comes to your outfit. If you’re applying for a creative role such as a designer, you have to show some fashion sense.

Again, you don’t want to go overboard, but you want a casual outfit, with something that stands out– be it your choice of shoes, make-up, or t-shirt design. Accessories can also help here. You want to show off your style, without looking like you’re making too much of an effort to stand out.

Good Luck with the Interview!

Hopefully we’ve given you some ideas for how to nail your outfit for your job interview. Remember– if you’re still not sure, it never hurts to ask your contact at the company what the dress code is like. It shows you’re thorough, which can help with your first impression.

Get the outfit right and you’ll look the part; it’ll also give you the confidence you need to perform at your best in the interview. We wish you the best of luck– go get that new job!
